Taking a look back

The last weeks of the last year were very busy which was seen in lack of posts. I decided to take a little look back at last year to see what all happened.

During the last year we saw the botnet created by the storm worm to grow in size and then getting a lot smaller again. For some reason, they almost missed the traditional christmas spam runs, and seem to have troubles running their operations in other ways also.

We also saw that the warezov gang have been keeping a low profile, if that could be said. Sure, they are still running about 800 active domains by fast-fluxing and using them for malware spreading and the viagra pharm-sites, but they haven’t been as visible in the spam ops as other gangs have been. Though with China’s reluctance to actually take down the sites, I estimate warezov will be alive and kicking for a long time.

I released a few tools along the way, some of which have been downloaded a few times and some of which have been downloaded a bit more. I’ve gotten feedback on some of them, and the tools will be improved based on the feedback when I get the time to do it.

Most of the year was pretty quiet traffic-wise with about 200 daily visitors on the site. The publications of the allaple remover tool and the stormworm remover raised the visitor count slightly, but it wasn’t until Novembers TOR posts that the base traffic doubled to about 400-500 visitors per day:
